Not only did James Clerk Maxwell have a very, very impressive beard; he was also very, very clever.
He shot to prominence in his twenties by winning an international competition to prove what the rings of Saturn were made of. He proved that they consisted of pieces of rock by using mathematics alone. I won’t even begin to try and explain how he did that because it’s totally beyond me. Decades later when human beings could build telescopes powerful enough to see Saturn’s rings clearly, we found that they consisted of pieces of rock.
I guess that as long as you and I get the point that Maxwell was a helluva clever chap, that’ll probably do.
